FIEAust CPEng EngExec NER APEC Engineer IntPE(Aus)

I received my Bachelor and Master degree from the University of Hong Kong. Then I obtained my PhD in 1989 at the University of Wales, Swansea. After working at Cambridge University, I became a lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Then I was appointed Reader at the University of Birmingham and later conferred the title Professor in Computational Engineering.

In February 2013, I moved to Australia to take up the position Professor of Civil Engineering and Deputy Dean, IT and Engineering at the University of Ballarat, now, Federation University Australia. Then I became Associate Dean Research in July 2014 before moving to University of Tasmania in March 2015. I was the Professor and Head of School of Engineering and ICT at University of Tasmania and now the Professor and Head of School of Engineering.

I am a Civil Engineer by training and specialising in Numerical modelling in Geomechanics, Geotechnical Engineering, Earthquake Engineering and Computer methods as well as Information Technology in Civil Engineering. I have supervised over 30 PhD students to graduation and authored or co-authored over 230 published technical journal and conference papers as well one technical book as well as a number of chapters in edited books.

I am an active member of the Australian Geomechanics Society, Australian Association for Computational Mechanics and the Australian Research Council College of Experts. I am a Chartered Engineer in UK, Europe, Australia, APEC as well as a registrant on the National Engineer Register in Australia and the International Register. I am currently a Fellow of EA and an Engineering Executive.

I have been a co-opted member of the EA Tasmanian Division Committee since arriving in Tasmania. I am seeking election to the divisional committee so that I can extend my contributions and involvements in the divisional committee. I have contributed in two main ways in the Division Committee and I shall seek to enhance these contributions.

  1. UTas is the only university in Tasmania and School of Engineering is the only engineering school in Tasmania offering a wide range of Bachelor and Master degrees for the State. It is important that EA and UTas work closely together in both strategic and activity levels. My inclusion in the divisional committee will enhance and provide leadership to such activities. This will provide strong added value to the engineering community, engineering employers, engineers and students. I shall also work to increase the involvement and membership of university students and graduates by enhancing the value of membership.

  2. With my international experiences, I would provide an international perspective to the strategic direction and operation of the divisional committee. With the advance of information and communication technology, engineering, in particular in technology and design, has become more and more location agnostic. It is important to prepare our engineering students and engineers to adapt and thrive in this globalised environment which is one of my main goals in my continuing involvement in the divisional committee.

I wish to nominate for Engineers Australia Tasmania Division Committee. I am a hydrologist with more than 25 years of experience in leading hydrologic studies on major projects nationally and internationally in the areas of flood hydrology, climate change impacts on water availability, flood forecasting, hydropower hydrology and yield analysis.

I have been responsible for delivery and technical standard of the hydrology component on major international projects including hydropower feasibility, design and due diligence studies; dam design; irrigation scheme feasibility and design; and inflow and flood forecasting.

I have a strong interest in leadership, promoting water engineering, and development of young professionals, which has driven me to take up a number of technical and professional leadership and management roles during my career.

I am currently a Director and Hobart Office Manager of WMAwater, which includes leading a small team and contributing to development of business strategies and management. I have previously led large teams of technical staff, formally mentored junior staff, and have been actively involved in development of professional development and leadership programs.

My voluntary roles in the water engineering area include as a member and past Chair of Engineers Australia’s National Committee on Water Engineering, past member of Engineers Australia Civil College Board, Chair of organising committee for Engineers Australia’s Hydrology and Water Resources Symposium (HWRS) 2015 and member of organising committee for HWRS 2006.

I am passionate about developing young engineers and providing opportunities for career development for engineers within Tasmania. I have a particular interest in integrating climate change and sustainability into engineering design, and promoting holistic approaches to engineering tasks.

As part of the Tasmanian Division Committee I would work to provide opportunities for career development and professional development for Tasmanian Engineers. I would strive to represent the interests and promote the value of Tasmanian Engineers at a national level.
